Transdisciplinary Symposium on Neuron Aesthetics
Berlin, Germany
The Transdisciplinary Symposium on Neuron Aesthetics at Humboldt University on January 26-27, 2024, blends neuroscience and the arts, featuring key insights from Prof. Petra Ritter. Focusing on neuron aesthetics, memory, and the interplay between music and neural networks, this innovative event promises a deep dive into the complexities of brain processes in a unique, artistic setting.
On January 26th and 27th, 2024, the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin will host a groundbreaking Transdisciplinary Symposium on Neuron Aesthetics. This event, intricately linked to the 'Theatre of Memory' represents a harmonious blend of natural and cultural sciences, music, and the arts. It ventures into the realm of neuro aesthetics – a paradigm shift from conventional neuroaesthetics, focusing not just on interbrain interaction patterns but delving deeply into the microscopic world of single neuron research.
Memory: The 'Godot' of Our Neural Theater
The symposium will spotlight memory, often likened to Samuel Beckett's "Godot" in the neural theater. The event will draw parallels between the synchronization of neurons in memory formation and an orchestra's coordinated harmony, as emphasized by Kol & Goshen in 2021. It will challenge the neuron doctrine, which positions neurons as pivotal actors in the theater of memory, by examining it from physiological, historical-scientific, and philosophical perspectives. Crucially, it will delve into the complex interplay between neural networks and music, envisaging music as a spatiotemporal sound network. This approach not only aligns with ongoing discussions on artificial intelligence but also highlights the intricate symphony of living intelligence.
Contributions of Prof. Petra Ritter.
Among the distinguished contributors to this symposium is Prof. Petra Ritter, who, in collaboration with other esteemed professionals, has played a significant role in conceptualizing this event. On January 27th, in Panel 4, Prof. Ritter will present a talk titled "What can digital brain twins do?" exploring the cutting-edge interface between digital technology and neural research.
The Unique Theatre of Memory
An integral part of the symposium is the 'Theatre of Memory' at the Tieranatomischen Theater. This immersive sound space, featuring 70 spherical, colorfully illuminated loudspeakers, mimics the interaction of nerve cells. This dynamic acoustic self-organization creates complex tone networks, offering an experiential understanding of the neural processes that make us sentient beings. The 'Theatre of Memory' is an interactive, walk-in sound space that allows visitors to engage with and influence the sound network, mirroring the complex cognitive processes in our brains.
